NCDs: A Silent Killer – Although Not Contagious, but can Lead to Disability or Death

Last updated: 21 Sept 2026

NCDs, or 'Non-Communicable Diseases,

are a group of chronic diseases that are not contagious. These are diseases that are not caused by infection and cannot be spread from person to person. The causes of these diseases are mostly due to our lifestyle habits, including eating, sleeping, exercise, and genetics. They progress slowly and cumulatively. If left untreated, they will develop into chronic conditions. This has detrimental effects on the patient's future health.

Examples of diseases in this group include:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Obesity
etc.

‍Neglecting health care and treatment of NCDs can lead to more dangerous conditions or diseases such as:
- Stroke
- Myocardial infarction
- Chronic kidney failure
- Dementia
etc.

These diseases can cause disability or be life-threatening. Furthermore, the WHO reports that NCDs are the leading cause of death in Thailand, with over 300,000 deaths annually, and this number is steadily increasing. Alarmingly, most die before the age of 60, a time when individuals can still work and enjoy their families for many years. Therefore, paying attention to health early on is crucial for a long and happy life.
